Customized educational
navigation

At Beyond the Classroom we continue to seek out ways to support your family with the education journey. New in 2022 is the availability of our Educational Navigation Service.  An educational navigator will help your family make informed decisions along your child’s educational path including transitions from year to year, grade school to secondary school, and from secondary to post-secondary.

We are available to meet with you at any point in the process. We offer a complimentary 15 to 30 minute online appointment to make sure our services will meet what you are seeking in terms of the educational consulting.

The areas of focus that are possible with educational navigation are:

  • Special Education
  • Course Selection
  • IEP Requirements
  • Graduation Requirements and Planning for Post-Secondary
  • US School Applications and Advice
  • Consultation on your child’s student success profile (My Blueprint)

The consultation appointments are available online and are typically 1-hour in length.

Here are some examples of how we help families:

Advice on Psycho-educational Assessments:

When you suspect your child has a learning disability it’s difficult to always know what to do. The best first step is to speak with your child’s teacher about what they are noticing and what they suggest for the next steps.

If a psycho-educational assessment is recommended, traditionally you have two options:

  1. Be put on the waitlist with the school to receive a free assessment (which can take many months/years).
  2. Look privately for an organization who does the assessments to speed up the time frame, however it can be costly.

Once you have this information, next you will need to figure out the relevant information to share with the school and embark on an IEP (Individual Education Plan) meeting with the school.

This can be overwhelming and our educational navigator is specialized in this area.

They will meet with you to review the information you need to know, how to advocate for your child at school and what the next steps may be.  The IEP is a legal document, and it is the school’s responsibility to follow it and update throughout the year(s). Learn about your child’s rights and how best to use this document.

Consultation on Courses to take at High School:

This can start in grade 8 or when your child is already enrolled in high school. Our educational navigator will consult with you and your child on the best path for them given their individual interests and strengths. They will help carve out a path to reach your child’s academic goals and continue to support your family throughout the high school journey as needed.

Consultation on Plans for Post-Secondary:

In grade 11, it’s a great time to start looking ahead to what’s next with your child’s educational path based on their individual needs (if not sooner). There are so many options these days for programs, diplomas and degrees all over the world. By meeting with our educational navigator you will walk away with a plan for what options will suit your child the best and action items.

Planning for Elite Athletes and Education:

If your child is an elite athlete who is looking to pursue scholarships and opportunities within and outside of Canada, our educational navigator can help you look at the big picture along with the many options available to you. For this type of consultation, it’s recommended to book an appointment in grade 7 onward (depending on your child’s level). It’s never too early to start collecting information to get an understanding of the best steps to support your son or daughter.

Additional ways we can help:

Sometimes you need someone who has over 20 years of experience in student success and special education to ask questions and receive guidance from. The education system is not easy to navigate and each child has their own unique set of strengths and needs. We are here to offer our support to help your child reach their academic and personal milestones.
